Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a surgery to improve the appearance and comfort of the abdomen. Excess skin and fat and removed and stretched/separated muscles are repaired.
Surgery is performed under general anaethesia. Surgery may take 3 to 4 hours depending on complexity of surgery. A long horizontal incision is made across the lower abdomen and excess soft tissue is removed. Your belly button is repositioned through a new small opening.
You will normally spend 1 to 2 nights in hospital. You may have a wound drain and a bladder catheter in place. The bladder catheter is removed the day after surgery and the wound drain is removed when the amount of wound fluid decreases, which may take several days or sometimes longer.
You will be seen around 1 week after surgery to change the dressings and check the wounds.
After surgery, we recommend you rest. Most people get back to normal activities around 3-4 weeks after surgery. We recommend holding off on strenuous exercise or gym for 6 weeks after surgery.
Abdominoplasty is an extensive surgery, and complications are alwasy possible. These include bleeding, infection, scar, asymmetry and wound healing problems.
The surgery is approximately $30,000 but can vary depending on what exactly is required. This includes the surgeon's fee, hospital fees and anaesthetic fees.
