Breast reduction

What is an breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery reduces the volume and weight of breast tissue. It is an effective treatment to improve the breast proportions and physical symptoms such as neck pain. The aim is to provide you with smaller and lighter breast, with better uplift and shape, with less difficulty exercising and participating in sport.

What does surgery involve?

Surgery is usually performed under general (asleep) anaesthesia. The procedure may be performed as a day procedure or with an overnight stay in hospital. The procedure takes about 3 hours.

What is the recovery?

A supportive bra without an underwire is recommended for 6 weeks after surgery.

Pain is usually controlled with simple pain relief such as paracetamol.

The sutures are typically self dissolving. If you have had liposuction there may be some bruising.

We recommend return to normal activities at 4 weeks after surgery and sport at 6 weeks after surgery.

What are the risks?

The surgery leaves a scar around the nipple, below the nipple and in the fold under the breast. The scars usually settle well, but can be prominent in some cases.

Some women experience changes in sensation of the breast after surgery.

Bleeding, infection, wound healing issues are possibilities.

Breast feeding after breast reduction is possible but may not be successful.

Some residual asymmetry is possible.

What are the costs?

The cost is approximately $24,000 to 28,000. This includes the surgical fee, anaesthesist and hospital fee.

Your insurance plan may cover part of the cost.
