Congenital ear differences are common and can include conditions such as prominent ears (often referred to as "bat ears"), ear asymmetry, microtia (a smaller ear), anotia (a missing ear), or constricted ears (also known as "lop ears" or "cup ears").
It is estimated that between 6% and 45% of children have some degree of congenital ear difference. While many of these conditions may improve on their own as the child grows, some, especially more severe differences, can persist and potentially lead to self-consciousness or bullying in the future.
The good news is that many of these differences can be significantly improved without the need for surgery or other invasive treatments. In the first six weeks of life, the circulating maternal estrogen hormone in the baby's bloodstream makes the ear cartilage malleable, allowing for gentle molding with simple taping techniques.
It is generally recommended to start this treatment sooner rather than later, as the younger the baby, the shorter the required time for taping and higher the chance of success.
Numerous commercial products for taping are available on the market (such as EarWell, EarBuddies etc.). However these can be expensive, delay treatment while waiting for shipping, and may not be any more effective than a simpler, more cost effective taping solutions.
An excellent, publicly available guide by Dr Sarah Gardiner and the team at Te Whatu Ora - Canterbury offers clear instructions for a technique that uses basic products available at most local pharmacies or from a New Zealand supplier.

At Te Whatu Ora - Waikato, ear differences are among the more common referrals I receive. If the child is young enough, the first step I take is to refer patients to this invaluable guide. For older children, particularly those about to start school, we discuss potential surgical options if they or their family wish to pursue them.
For adult patients or those seeking treatment within the private healthcare system, consultations can be arranged at Kwon Plastic Surgery. More information about this service is available here: "Otoplasty".
